Baylor suffered its first home loss of the season on Saturday, after dropping a 42-30 decision to Texas A&M. Now, the Bears will look to rebound in their last game of the regular season against Oklahoma. Baylor hosts the Sooners for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Floyd Casey Stadium. The contest will be televised nationally on ESPN 2.
Here are Art Briles' Sunday thoughts on the Bears' loss to Texas A&M as well as Saturday's upcoming game against Oklahoma.
On the changes in momentum...
"Huge shifts. Field position, I think was critical in the game. I think their average starting position was the 46 and ours was the 23, so that is something we really have to do better at. That of course is involved a lot with the special teams."
On what he sees in the kickoff coverage...
"I am seeing that we have to do a better job. We have got to coach better. We have to execute better from top to bottom."
On the injuries in his defense...
"You always have to deal with that. In the game of football there is always going to be injuries. You coach them up and get them ready and then turn them loose. Fortunately, we have guys that walk out on the field with a lot of passion, a lot of energy."
On the running game...
"They (Texas A&M) have done real well against the run, honestly. We go into every game feeling like we need to establish the run, because we certainly feel like it allows us to do other things. It has been something that we have been able to hang our hat on."
On A&M's defense in the second half...
"I think late in the game, they definitely rolled the safety down and made it an emphasis to stop the run."
On the physicality and emotion of the game...
"I thought it was a very physical game. I really did. There was a lot of emotional energy on the field from both sides. That is what you would expect when you have got two universities fighting hard to get a win. That is what makes it disappointing: we played with a lot of passion and energy."
On if this loss is different than others...
"It stings without a doubt, so you can't linger, but you can remember. That is just the way we will have to approach it. We will learn from it. There was some tough lessons, but then we will become better from it as coaches and players."
On how he will coach Aaron Jones this week...
"I will talk with him to see where he is at emotionally and mentally, but he can't let it beat him up. He is still a good kicker. It just didn't work out the way he anticipated or any of us did last night. Lot of homerun hitters strikeout a bunch, so you can't worry about the times you strikeout, you have to get ready for your next homerun."
On how the missed field goals affected the offense...
" It is all about momentum. When you have got the opportunity to score points, you need to score points. There is a lot of factors involved. You need to be scoring touchdowns first off, but if that is not a possibility then you try to get out of there with a field goal, because they add up."
On still being able to reach the eight-win mark...
"We are not looking at that. What we have got to do is shake ourselves off and clean ourselves up and get ready for a new day. That is what we will do versus OU. It is a whole new week, a whole new personality of an opponent from a schematic standpoint to a personnel standpoint, so you have to adjust and prepare differently. That is what we will do beginning today."
On moving the ball in the second half...
"We did, but you have got to get points. We just didn't get points. A play here or there and it could have been an entirely different outcome. It didn't happen."
On the atmosphere...
"That was an amazing atmosphere. It is the best atmosphere we have had in the last three years, so we are very appreciative to the student body first and foremost, I mean they really turned out and supported, and then the fans for coming and coming hungry. They had a lot of energy and we fed off of it, no doubt, early in the game, so we just got to do a better job of maintaining and keeping that energy. We have a good football team coming to town and we are looking for another good atmosphere. Our guys will be primed up and ready."
