TULSA, Okla. - The Baylor men's tennis wrapped up its participation in the 2010 D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships as senior
John Peers dropped his third round match in the singles main draw on Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
After his two-win performance on Thursday, the 28th-ranked Peers fell down 3-0 in the first set to eighth-ranked Eric Quigley of Kentucky, but was able to win six of the next seven games to take the set 6-4. In the second set Peers served for the match with a 6-5 lead, but was broken and Quigley took the set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(3). In the third set the Wildcat put the match away with a 6-1 win.
"Out of the gate, John was a little flat," head coach Matt Knoll said. "I think he had a bit of a hangover from the previous match, but he did a great job of finding a way into the set and ended up winning it. The second set was kind of a continuation of the first where he was doing some good things, but just wasn't able to make enough first serves and then he kind of ran out of gas in the third."
Peers falls to 5-2 on the year, after his 2-1 showing in the All-American main draw.
"John has a clearer vision of what he is supposed to do with his return game and a much clearer vision of how to manage his emotions," Knoll said. "I just think he is seeing the game a lot better than when he came to us two months ago."
The tennis team will be back in action next weekend as select athletes take part in the USTA Futures event in Mansfield, Texas, Oct. 15-18.
