TULSA, Okla. - The run of
John Peers at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships opened with two victories on Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center as the senior advanced to the round of 16 in the singles main draw.
The 28th-ranked Peers kicked off his day with a straight-sets win over 54th-ranked Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of Washington, 6-4, 6-4. Peers ran out to a 5-1 lead in the first set and never looked back to reach the second round.
"It was a good, tough match," head coach Matt Knoll said. "He got through it in straight sets, which was great. He probably played the best tennis of maybe his life, but certainly of his Baylor career to go up big in the first and he was really doing everything right."
In the round of 32, Peers met Chris Kearney of UC-Irvine and once again won the first set, 7-5. From there the match was a back and forth battle with Kearney squaring the contest by winning a tiebreaker, 7-3. In the third Peers battled back and clinched the match with a 7-3 win of his own in a tiebreaker.
"The second match was epic," Knoll said. "It was one of those special matches that you hope everybody gets to play. It was really tight the whole way with a lot of drama. Both guys fought hard and John was able to get through it at the end. It was just a battle."
With the two wins Peers moves to 5-1 on the season and will now face Kentucky's Eric Quigley in round of 16 action on Friday at 9 a.m. Quigley is the tournament's eighth-seed and is ranked eighth in the ITA's preseason listings.
