TULSA, Okla. - The second day of play for
Sergio Ramirez at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships was even more successful than his first as the senior won two matches to earn his way out of the prequalifying draw and into qualifying action at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Sunday.
Ramirez will join teammates Roberto Maytin and Kike Grangeiro as the group of Bears open up play in the qualifying draw on Monday. Both Maytin and Grangeiro were part of the 63 at-large selections to that draw.
To reach the qualifying draw, Ramirez dispatched of Wichita State's Juan Estenssoro, 6-1, 6-1, in his second match on Sunday, after dropping Rob Lowe of North Carolina State by the same score earlier in the day.
"Sergio played a lot more solidly today," head coach Matt Knoll said. "He focused way better. That was the thing that has been inconsistent. He just hasn't locked it down with his concentration level, but in these two matches he did a much better job of doing that. If he can keep it up I am really excited to see what he can do in the next several days here."
With the two wins Ramirez improves to 7-3 on the season in three tournaments played.
The Cali, Columbia, product, opened the tournament with a first round bye after receiving a No. 17-32 seeding designation. He then posted a come-from-behind three-set win over Cal Poly's Brian McPhee in second round action. The thrilling win coupled with Sunday's two victories gives Ramirez a 3-0 record in Tulsa and makes him one of only 16 players from the 256-man pre-qualifying draw to earn a spot in the 128-man qualifying draw.
Following the trio of Bears playing in the qualifying draw, Baylor's lone ranked player, No. 28 John Peers, will open up play in the singles main draw on Thurs., Oct. 7 as one of 22 at-large selections into the 64-player field.
Before starting singles play Peers will partner with Maytin beginning Tuesday, in the doubles qualifying draw as the 57th-ranked duo looks to move on into main draw play.
