WACO - Junior Christine Clark scored the game-winning goal in the 69th minute, and Baylor (8-3-1, 1-2-1 Big 12) held on the final 21 minutes to defeat Nebraska (8-4-0, 1-2 Big 12) 2-1 at Betty Lou Mays Field on Friday night. The victory matches the Bears' win total from 2009.
"I know what this team is capable of and we continued to show it tonight," head coach Marci Jobson said. "Our bench came up huge for us, and it was a great win for this young team."
The win keeps Baylor's undefeated home mark in tact at 7-0-1 on the year. The Bears are now 3-0-1 against Nebraska over the past four seasons.
Freshman Alex Klein picked up her first career goal in the first half, while Clark's was her second of 2010.
After almost nearly 45 minutes of even soccer, Vic Hoffman played a great ball to Klein who headed towards the end line, cut the ball back and beat the keeper to the near post with 11 seconds left on the clock for the 1-0 lead heading to half. Each team collected 10 shots in the opening stanza.
Nebraska came out firing in the second half, and nearly tied the game in the 47th minute when a Molly Thomas shot hit the crossbar and was cleared out by Baylor defenders.
The Huskers evened the game in the 60th minute as a shot from Thomas was saved by Courtney Seelhorst, but the rebound came to the feet of Morgan Marlborough, who tapped it in for her 11th of the year.
The Bears took the lead back for good, however, as Clark came away with the ball four yards from the goal and put it away for a 2-1 lead.
Seelhorst, who made a season-high six saves on the night, and the Baylor defense held the Huskers out of the goal the rest of the way, running out the clock for the win.
The Bears will remain at home for a match against No. 22 Colorado (5-5-1, 1-1-1 Big 12) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Betty Lou Mays Field.
