DENTON, Texas - After last weekend's meet got washed out with rain, Baylor's women's cross country team was back in action, placing second at the Ken Garland Invitational, hosted by the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.
The Bears finished the meet with 44 total points, just 11 behind SMU's 33 on the five-kilometer course. Running without its top runners, Baylor was in the thick of the race the whole way. The women finished the meet with four runners in the top 10 spots.
"Our women did a great job today," head coach Todd Harbour said. "They went out fast and definitely gave a great effort. It was tough, muddy conditions, but they had their hand in there the whole way and battled. SMU will be a good team this season. They will give us all we want at the regional meet."
Cate Westenhover led the charge for the women, finishing in fifth place with a time of 18:28. Sam Patty, Kristen Hanselka, and Katie Barry finished eight through 10th for the Bears. Patty crossed in 18:44, one second ahead of Hanselka, and five seconds ahead of Berry.
Other top finishers for the Bears included Allison Woerner in 17th at 19:14, Lindsay Warner in 22nd at 19:31, and Kathryn Benvegnu in 31st at 20:19.
The women will be off until Oct. 2, when they travel to the Bill Dellinger Invitational at the University of Oregon, while the men, who were off this week, travel to the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 26.
