WACO, Texas - The Baylor volleyball team competed last weekend at the Texas State spring tournament, finishing the weekend with a 7-1 record.
The Bears played two sets each against UT-Arlington, North Texas, Angelo State and UTSA, with its only loss of the weekend coming in a split against North Texas. Anna Breyfogle and Katie Sanders led the way for Baylor with 28 kills apiece, while Briana Tolbert hit for a .348 average.
Qian Zhang, coming off a knee injury suffered late in the 2008 season, added 10 kills against only one hitting error. Taylor Barnes played the setter position for half of the sets, compiling a 4-0 record, while Brittany Ridenour played setter for a 3-1 record.
"Spring tournaments are for us to evaluate individuals and our team systems," said head coach Jim Barnes. "We put in different lineups and emphasize several training goals over just winning the game in spring. We have the most experienced, talented team we've ever had at Baylor and we are expecting a great deal from them. We did not play up to our expectations this tournament and the girls know that if we are going to contend for a Big 12 championship we will need to play with a higher level of intensity and execution. We think this will be a good learning experience for us and look forward to April 4th were we will play some top level teams."
Baylor returns to action this weekend as the Bears head to Houston for the Texas Tordados College Tournament.
