WACO, Texas - Baylor volleyball head coach Jim Barnes announced the signing of Kate Harris to a financial aid agreement for the 2010-2011 academic year. Harris, who recently finished her freshman season at Missouri, was the third-ranked setter and 23rd-ranked overall player in the 2009 recruiting class, according to PrepVolleyball.com.
"To get a player of Kate's caliber is huge for our program after losing the all-time assists leader in Taylor Barnes," Jim Barnes said. "Kate is the highest-ranked player we have ever signed, and she has All-American potential."
Harris, a 5-9 setter from Lee's Summit, Mo., comes to Baylor as the highest-ranked setter in program history. During her high school career, Harris helped Lee's Summit West to the Missouri Class 4 state championships in 2007 and a runner-up finish in 2008, while also earning all-state honors twice.
"She is an extremely fast player, and has a great knowledge of the game," Jim Barnes said. "Kate comes from a lineage of volleyball, and loves being in the gym. She is a player that is extremely smart, and takes great pride in her level of fitness. Along with being a great student, Kate is the total package."
Harris played in 17 sets in 2009 as a freshman for Missouri, chalking up 92 assists and 16 digs, while adding a kill and three block assists. She had a season-best 28 assists in just two sets in a win over Fairfield, then had 10 assists in the final set against then-No. 17 Utah.
Harris joins incoming freshman Courtney Windham and Sam Skryd for the 2010-11 season. Windham is a 6-3 middle blocker from Cypress, Texas, ranked in PrepVolleyball.com's Top 115, while Skryd is a 5-9 setter from Naperville, Ill., ranked in the Top 150.
Baylor's volleyball team recently finished a historic season with a 24-10 record, and its first-ever trip to the Sweet 16 after knocking off the highest-ranked team in program with a 3-1 win at No. 9 UCLA.
