NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Jordan Rux (Kerrville, Texas) stumbled in his first round match at the ITA National Indoor Championships on Thursday afternoon.
Rux, 10-3 on the fall season and 1-1 in indoor competition, dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to freshman Jamere Jenkins of Virginia. Rux is ranked No. 27 in the ITA's preseason listings and is now 1-6 in indoor matches over the last two seasons. Jenkins is not ranked in the ITA listings.
"Jordan ran into a really good indoors player today," men's tennis assistant coach Chris Brandi said. "Jordan unfortunately hasn't had a ton of experience inside and just wasn't good enough today. It is a little bit quicker courts then he is used to playing and he just didn't do a good enough job staying aggressive through the whole match."
The loss places Rux into the consolation bracket where he will face Scen Vloedgraven of Binghamton. Rux has been reseeded as the fourth seed in the 16-player bracket.
Rux was selected to the championships as one of 12 at-large bids in the tournament. The rest of the field is composed of the 12 regional champions, the four All-American semifinalists, two host wildcards, one super bowl champion from the Small College Championships and one ITA wildcard.
The tournament hosted by Yale University at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn., consists of a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles field, with a mandatory consolation field for first round losers. Of the 32 singles participants 25 are ranked in the ITA preseason rankings. Among those 25 ranked players are the No. 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 players in the listings.
The Bears have had a representative in ITA Indoor Championships every year since 2001.
To be selected as an at-large participant, competitors must have reached at least the quarterfinals of an ITA Regional Championship. From this pool, the ITA National Tournament Committee selects singles players in order of preseason ITA national ranking (once the ranking lists has been exhausted, the committee will make the selection based on fall results/performance.)
