Waco, Texas - With a 6-1 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center, the Baylor's men's tennis team punched its ticket to the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Competition in Chicago on Feb. 13.
"We are getting better," head coach Matt Knoll said. "We are pleased with a lot of the things that happened."
Baylor won the doubles point to build an early lead over the Yellow Jackets. At the No. 2 spot in doubles play Attila Bucko and Julian Bley opened with an 8-2 win over Guillermo Gomez and Eliot Potvin. BU's Dominik Mueller and Maros Horny closed out the doubles point with an 8-4 triumph over Kevin King and Doug Kenny. Baylor's No. 1 doubles team of Denes Lukacs and Jordan Rux went on to beat Miguel Muguruza and Ryan Smith, 8-3.
"It is hard not to be pleased with our doubles," Knoll said. "We put some new combinations out there and we did a couple different things tactically and they worked."
In singles play the Bears kept their momentum rolling from the doubles matches, as 13th-ranked Jordan Rux took out Kevin King 6-0, 6-0 and No. 71 Dominik Mueller dispatched of Dusan Milijevic 6-1, 6-1. From there freshman Julian Bley locked up the match for the Bears for the second day in a row with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 3 singles spot. Maros Horny went on to defeat Austin Roebuck in three sets, 6-1,4-6, 6-2. Meanwhile, Baylor's No. 1 singles player Denes Lukacs took down Georgia Tech's only ranked player, beating 14th-ranked Guillermo Gomez 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8). Georgia Tech earned its only point of the match in the final contest on the court as Miguel Muguruza bested No. 40 Attila Bucko 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The Bears are now 3-1 on the season and will host Texas A&M Corpus Christi next Sunday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
"We are really excited to play A&M Corpus next week, that will be another great opportunity to get better," Knoll said. "We are going to have to do better if we are going to do well at the Indoor because the competition is going to be tougher up there."
San Diego State will play Utah tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the last match of the tournament.
