WACO, Texas - Briana Tolbert recorded nine kills with no hitting errors on .750 hitting as Baylor swept San Diego State 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-12) on Friday night on the first day of the Baylor Classic. Earlier in the day, Baylor notched a 3-0 sweep over Weber State.
Tolbert's nine kills came on 12 total attacks. She also added four total blocks and two digs. Her hitting percentage ranks as the fourth-highest in Baylor history for a three-set match.
"It is always so much fun to watch Briana play," said head coach Jim Barnes. "She is capable of doing so many different things on the court, and tonight she put up a lot of impressive numbers on offense."
Katie Sanders added eight kills against one hitting error on .318 hitting to go along with two service aces and six total blocks. Ashlie Christenson also tallied eight kills and two blocks.
Taylor Barnes recorded 24 set assists and five kills on .571 hitting. She led the Baylor offense to a .349 hitting percentage on the match, outhitting San Diego State by nearly 300 points.
"Taylor was a huge catalyst for us tonight," said Barnes. "I think this was the best match she has ever played. She distributed the ball really well, and was able to keep the defense off balance. There were a lot of times when we were scrambling during a rally and she was able to get us some easy points."
Jordan Rice led the defense with nine digs, while Barnes and Allison King added eight digs apiece. Anna Breyfogle tallied a match-high seven blocks as the Bears tallied 11 total blocks to just four for the Aztecs.
"Jordan and Allison have really started communicating better," said Barnes. "Allison passed the ball really well, and that `s good to see from a freshman."
Lauren Salisbury led the way for San Diego State with six kills, while Kyley Sexton recorded a team-high seven digs.
Baylor improves to 5-0 on the season, while San Diego State falls to 2-3 overall. The Bears return to action on Saturday for the second day of competition at the Baylor Classic. The Bears take on UTSA at 10:30 a.m. before facing Rice at 3 p.m.
