WACO, Texas - BAYLOR VOLLEYBALL SET TO HOST BAYLOR CLASSIC
The Baylor volleyball team is back in action this weekend as the Bears host the Baylor Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Ferrell Center. Originally scheduled to be a four-team tournament, Rice was added to the slate earlier in the week after their scheduled tournament at LSU was cancelled due to the effects of Hurricane Gustav. Baylor will face Weber State on Friday at 12 noon before facing San Diego State in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday the Bears will play UTSA at 10:30 a.m. and will take on Rice at 3 p.m. Baylor is coming off a midweek win at Texas State on Tuesday evening in San Marcos, Texas. The two teams split the first two sets, but Baylor roared out of the halftime to blitz the Bobcats with a 25-7 score in the third set. The Bears looked to be cruising through the fourth set as well, but Texas State rallied to tie the score at 20 apiece. Baylor had two match points before Texas State rallied to take a 26-25 lead. Baylor scored three straight points to secure the match, 3-1. Baylor placed four attackers in double-digit kills and the Bears racked up a season-best 13 total blocks. Allison King led the way for Baylor with a career-high 18 digs. All nine matches of the Baylor Classic can be followed on GameTracker at BaylorBears.com. The first three of Baylor's matches will also feature a live audio broadcast.
LAST YEAR AT THE BAYLOR CLASSIC
Baylor only hosted one weekend tournament during the 2007 season, and has never hosted two regular season weekend tournaments in program history. The last time Baylor hosted a five-team tournament was during the 2006 season. The Bears swept all four matches at the Clarion Invitational as Baylor defeated New Mexico and Louisiana-Monroe on the first day of competition, and downed Houston and Arkansas-Little Rock on the second day. Taylor Barnes was named the most valuable player of the tournament as she set an NCAA record, serving the first 12 points of the match against Louisiana-Monroe. Nicole LeBlanc and Desiree Guilliard-Young were also named to the all-tournament team.
LAST TIME OUT
The Baylor volleyball team placed four players in double-figure kills as the Bears pushed past Texas State (25-17, 23-25, 25-7, 28-26) on Tuesday night at Strahan Coliseum. Baylor improves to 3-0 on the season, while Texas State falls to 3-2 on the year. Katie Sanders paced the Baylor offense with 13 kills on the night. Anna Breyfogle tallied 12 kills, while Ashlie Christenson and Ashley Byrd recorded 10 kills apiece. Baylor got out to a quick lead in the fourth set, but Texas State rallied back to tie the score at 20 apiece. The Bears had match points at 24 and 25, but could not capitalize as Texas State managed a comeback to earn a set point at 26-25. A kill by Christenson and a service ace by Allison King gave Baylor another match point, and another tough serve from King forced a bad set by Texas State to give Baylor the win. Baylor, who struggled on its blocking defense in the first weekend of the season, recorded a season-best 13 total blocks. Breyfogle and Briana Tolbert led the way with six blocks each, including solo blocks for each. Texas State failed to record a block through the first three sets, but managed five total blocks in the deciding set.
