WACO, Texas- Baylor men's tennis had another successful day in singles play at the HEB Invitational Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center. The Bears saw the advancement of three players to the quarterfinals, with two moving onto the semifinals.
Singles action began with the round of 16 at 9:15 a.m. and saw Jordan Rux and Attila Bucko upset seeded players. Rux upset fifth-seeded Conor Pollock of Texas A&M 7-6, 7-6 while Bucko downed sixth-seeded Moritz Baumann of Wisconsin 7-5, 7-6 (6). Second-seeded Denes Lukacs rivaled back from a first set loss to defeat Texas A&M's Austin Krajicek in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Quarterfinals matches ended with Rux once again upsetting a seeded opponent and Lukacs finding another victory, but were the end of tournament for Bucko. Rux overcame fourth-seeded Bruno Rosa of Rice 7-5, 6-3. Lukacs defeated ninth-seeded Blake Strode of Arkansas 7-6(4), 6-4. Arnan Brugues of Tulsa, seeded third, beat Bucko 6-4, 6-4.
"All the guys worked hard today. We thought the level of competition would be high and we were not disappointed," said head coach Matt Knoll. "Denes was a little sluggish out of the gate in both matches, but settled down and played some solid tennis. Jordan beat two terrific players today and faces a massive challenge in the nation's No. 1 player tomorrow."
Top-seeded singles player Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State advanced to the semifinals. Third-seeded doubles team Eduardo Salas and Roman Stoisavljevic were upset in the semifinals along with eighth-seeded pair Victor Kolik and Phil Stephens of Tulsa.
