WACO, Texas - Anna Breyfogle recorded 14 kills on .500 hitting and added eight total blocks as Baylor defeated Texas Tech, 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22) on Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center. With the win, Baylor wins its Big 12 opener for the third time in the last four years.
The Bears have now won their last seven matches against Texas Tech, including season sweeps each of the last three years.
"We came out a little tight and it showed with our serving and hitting," said head coach Jim Barnes. "I thought that Anna played extremely well and it really showed in her hitting and blocking."
Breyfogle tied her season-high with 14 kills against only two hitting errors in 24 total attempts. The hitting percentage is her highest this season, improving on her .455 effort at Texas State. She also tallied eight total blocks including three solos.
"We have a lot of heart," said Breyfogle. "And that is really going to help us in the matches to come. We have good communication on our blocking and we spend a lot of time in practice working on it. We had a sluggish start tonight, but we were able to come back and get the win."
Katie Sanders led the way for Baylor with 16 kills and 11 digs to record her fourth kill-dig double-double of the season.
Taylor Barnes collected five kills with no errors on .556 hitting and added 41 set assists. She also recorded a team-high 13 digs and four service aces. The Bears hit .252 for the match, while holding Texas Tech to .147 hitting.
"Starting 1-0 in the Big 12 will give us a lot of confidence heading to Missouri on Sunday," said Taylor Barnes. "On my serve I just try to focus on what I'm trying to do. I make sure I get a high toss and then swing hard and try and get it in bounds."
Allison King reached double-digit digs for the fifth time this season with 11. The Bears recorded 50 digs compared to 48 for the Red Raiders.
Briana Tolbert contributed four total blocks including a solo as the Bears outblocked their opponent for the 10th time in the last 11 matches.
With the win Baylor improves to 9-2 on the season, 1-0 in Big 12 action. Texas Tech falls to 3-7 overall, 0-2 in conference play. Baylor returns to action on Sunday afternoon as the Bears travel to face Missouri at 1 p.m. at the Hearnes Center.
