EUGENE, Ore. - Katie Sanders tallied a match-high 16 kills as Baylor defeated Eastern Washington 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-10, 25-22) in the first match at the Oregon Classic. With the win Baylor improves to 8-0 on the season, matching its best start in school history. The Bears also started 8-0 in the 2001 and 1989 seasons.
Sanders connected on 16 kills and added a team-high 14 digs to record her fourth kill/dig double-double of the season. Ashlie Christenson also tallied double-digit kills with 10 for the Bears.
Baylor hit .246 as team, while limiting Eastern Washington to a .080 hitting percentage. The Bears have limited five of their eight opponents this season to a hitting percentage under .100.
Anna Breyfogle recorded six kills and added a match high five service aces. The Bears placed four players in double-digit digs led by 14 digs from Sanders. Breyfogle added 12 digs, while Taylor Barnes and Allison King contributed 10 digs apiece.
Baylor jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the first set, using three kills from Sanders. The Bears extended the lead to 19-10 on a Breyfogle service ace before Eastern Washington cut the lead to four at 22-18. Baylor got kills from Barnes and Ashley Byrd and a hitting error by the Eagles to close out the first set.
The Bears jumped out quickly in the second set, earning a 10-4 lead after a Breyfogle service ace. The Eagles rallied to tie the score at 14 apiece and the two teams traded points until a 22-22 tie. Eastern Washington finished the set with a kill, Baylor hitting error and Baylor ball handling error.
Baylor cruised through the third set, stuffing six total blocks and forcing Eastern Washington into 15 hitting errors. In the fourth set, Eastern Washington built a seven-point lead at 13-6 before Baylor rallied to tie the score at 19 apiece. Baylor won six of the next nine points, finishing the match with a Sanders kill.
Baylor tallied 13 total blocks, outblocking its opponent for the eighth-straight time this season. Briana Tolbert led the way with seven total blocks. Barnes and Breyfogle each tallied four blocks including one solo block each.
With the win, Baylor improves to 8-0 on the season, while Eastern Washington falls to 3-4 on the year. The Bears return to action on Saturday morning as Baylor faces UNLV at 10 a.m. Pacific time. Baylor also takes on Oregon at 7 p.m. Pacific time on Saturday night.
