WACO, Texas - Briana Tolbert recorded a career high 11 kills as Baylor swept Prairie View A&M 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-13) on Saturday morning at the Ferrell Center. Baylor wins its second match of the weekend at the Baylor Invitational. The Bears' match against Lamar, originally scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., has been cancelled due to the threat of Hurricane Gustav moving into the Beaumont, Texas area.
"We learned a lot in our two matches this weekend," said head coach Jim Barnes. "Our defense has been outstanding this weekend, and I think that our offense has gotten better. Our attacking still has some room to improve. We knew that since our match tonight was going to be cancelled we wanted to be sure to come out this morning and keep our focus and maintain our intensity."
Tolbert, a freshman from Houston, Texas, tallied her 11 kills on 22 total attacks with only four hitting errors to reach double-figure kills for the first time in her career. She also added three total blocks for the Bears.
"Briana is such an amazing athlete," said Barnes. "She is the type of player who is going to keep improving with every match. We are asking a lot of her and she is responding by performing very well on the court."
Katie Sanders and Taylor Barnes added eight kills apiece, with Barnes' total coming on eight total attacks. Overall, the Bears hit .367 for the math, including a .452 clip in the first set.
Baylor (2-0) took advantage from behind the service line, recording 16 service aces for the match. Anna Breyfogle led the way for the Bears with a career-best eight aces, which ranks as the second-best mark in school history for a three-set match. The eight aces also ranks as the third-highest total for a single-match regardless of length.
Baylor's 16 service aces ranks as the second-most in school history. In 1988, the Bears tallied 18 service aces against Montana in a five-game match. Krista Brenner and Qian Zhang each added two aces.
Jordan Rice led the back row defense for Baylor with seven digs, while Breyfogle tallied six digs and a team-high four total blocks. Allison King added six digs in two games as the libero.
"Jordan is a great reader of the game," said Barnes. "She is all over the court and doesn't let anything hit the ground. There is a reason why she was the state MVP last season as a high school senior. Allison is the type of player who makes the whole team better. She is very consistent and seems to dig every ball."
Sarah Mayweather led the way for Prairie View A&M (0-2) with four kills on .667 hitting. The Lady Panthers struggled on serve-receive, committing 16 receiving errors and only recording one service ace.
With Saturday evening's match cancelled, Baylor returns to action on Tuesday as the Bears travel to Texas State for their first road trip of the season. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the Jim Barnes Pregame Show starting at 6:50 p.m.
