Final Stats

TULSA, Okla. - The ninth-seeded Baylor men's tennis team lost in the NCAA Tournament's quarterfinals on Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Bears were defeated by the top-seeded and undefeated Virginia Cavaliers, 4-2.

Baylor finished its season with a 25-9 record while Virginia moves to 32-0.

After Virginia claimed the doubles point with wins at courts three and one, respectively, singles proved to be a much tighter competition.

The Cavaliers earned their second point when Michael Shabaz downed Attila Bucko 6-2, 6-4 on court five. Baylor countered when Dominik Mueller followed suit, defeating Sanam Singh on court four 6-3, 6-4. The Cavs gained their third point when top-ranked Somdev Devvarman triumphed over No. 8 Lars Poerschke 6-3, 6-2. Baylor inched closer when Denes Lukacs, ranked No. 9, beat 28th-ranked Treat Huey on court two 6-4, 7-5.

With Baylor players Jordan Rux and David Galic still on the court, the Bears needed to take both matches to secure the victory. After losing the first set 7-6 (2) on court six, Rux countered with a 6-3 second-set win while Galic, on court three, had won his first set 7-6 (3) and lost the second one 6-3. Virginia's Dominic Ingot, ranked No. 17, triumphed in the final set 7-5 over Galic to clinch the victory for Virginia.

"Congratulations to Virginia. They played great and deserved to win. I thought they knocked us out in a couple of spots in singles and put themselves in a real good position where they had to win just one of the two matches out there late. It came down to a couple of shots. I'm proud of our guys, we have nothing to be ashamed of. That team beat us 7-0 a couple of months ago. We finished on a good note, we fought hard down to the end and that's all you can do, you've got to give Virginia credit," said head coach Matt Knoll.
