Men's Tennis Takes Two Home Matches

WACO, Texas - The 18th-ranked Baylor Bears defeated No. 58 SMU, 5-2, Thursday evening in men's tennis action at the Baylor Tennis Center. Baylor is now 12-7 for the season while SMU falls to 13-7.

Baylor won the doubles point to take the early lead. The doubles team of David Galic and Denes Lukacs defeated Oivind Alver and Chris Hooshyar 8-1 to walk off the court first. Jordan Rux and Gwen Corches secured the doubles point for the Bears with their victory over Taylor St. Eve and Darren Walsh 8-6 on court three.

"The match was much closer than the score indicated," said head coach Matt Knoll, "To win 5-2 was a real boost and credit to Attila and Gwen. We are going to have to win the close ones to continue to be successful the rest of the season."

Earning the first singles point for Baylor was No. 107 Dominik Mueller with a solid win over opponent Chris Hooshyar 6-1, 6-1. With the Bears holding a narrow 3-2 lead with two matches still on the courts, Attila Bucko clinched the win for the Bears with an exciting three-set match resulting in his defeat of Taylor St. Eve 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. Less than a minute later, Gwen Corches claimed the Bears' fifth point with a win on court three.

In action earlier in the day, Baylor defeated Hardin-Simmons 7-0.

The Bears next match is Saturday, March 29 at 11a.m. against Laredo Community College and 7 p.m. against Memphis at the Baylor Tennis Center.
