Men's Tennis Loses at National Team Indoors

SEATTLE - The fourth-ranked Baylor men's tennis team lost to the 13th-ranked and 12th-seeded North Carolina Tarheels, 4-3, in second round action of the 16-team ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle on Saturday morning.

The Bears, now 7-2 on the season and 14-7 all-time in National Team Indoor Championships play, will take Penn State in third-round action on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (CT). With the victory, North Carolina raised its season record to 5-2.

The back-to-back losses to Oklahoma State and North Carolina marks the first time since the beginning of the 2006 season that the Bears have dropped consecutive matches. In 2006, Baylor lost to No. 2 Florida (4-3) on Jan. 29 and at seventh-ranked Virginia (6-1) on Feb. 4.

Despite losing the doubles point and dropping No. 3 singles to spot North Carolina a 2-0 lead, straight-set victories by Dominik Mueller, Lars Poerschke and Denes Lukacs at courts 6, 1 and 2, respectively, put Baylor up 3-2. North Carolina evened the match with a win by Chris Kearney over Gwen Corches at No. 4. As it did the day before, the final results would depend on the outcome at No. 5 singles. Freshman Jordan Rux triumphed in first-set play against Tarheel junior Taylor Fogleman 6-4, however, Fogleman rebounded to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-3 to secure the upset win for North Carolina.

"Congratulations to North Carolina. They were down a set and a break at No. 5 singles and fought back to win the match. We'll have to be much more courageous if we hope to win matches like these," said head coach Matt Knoll.
