STANFORD, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Baylor men's tennis team again claimed the Hewlett Packard Cup with a 5-2 road win over 49th-ranked Stanford on Wednesday at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
The Bears, now 7-0 on the season, also extended their win streak over Stanford, now 2-5 on the season, to seven straight. Baylor blanked the Cardinal last season, 7-0 in Waco, in the first-ever HP Cup.
"I was proud of the courage we showed in singles. Stanford did a super job and jumped on us to win the doubles point. It's the first time this team has lost the initial point and they responded beautifully. We learned a lot about ourselves today and it will help tremendously," said head coach Matt Knoll.
Stanford took an early 1-0 lead when they claimed the doubles point, winning on courts one and three. The Baylor tandem of Lars Poerschke and Dominik Mueller were the lone winners in doubles, posting an 8-6 win at No. 2.
Poerschke, David Galic, Gwen Corches, Jordan Rux and Mueller, all posted singles victories for the Bears. Rux, a freshman, gained Baylor its first point of the match when he posted a straight-sets victory at No. 5 and Mueller won a straight-sets match at No. 6. Poerschke, also a two set winner, was impressive in his victory over second-ranked Alex Clayton at No. 1. Galic, ranked No. 80, upset 75th-ranked Richard Wire at No. 3 and Corches lost his first set but rebounded to win the second in a tiebreaker and claimed the third 10-8. Stanford won its lone singles point when Matt Bruch downed Denes Lukacs on court two.
The Bears will now travel to Seattle, to compete in this weekend's prestigious 16-team ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Washington. Play will begin Friday, Feb. 16 and continue through Monday, Feb. 18 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center and Seattle Tennis Club in Seattle. The Bears' first-round opponent will be Oklahoma State.
