The Baylor cross country teams are back in action for the second of three championship races as the Bears host the 2008 NCAA South Central Regional Saturday, Nov. 15, at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. The women will compete in a 6,000-meter race at 10 a.m., while the men's race is scheduled for 10,000 meters to follow at 10:45 a.m.
Erin Bedell and Nichole Jones lead the way for Baylor, leading the Lady Bears as the top finishers in each meet this season. Both athletes were named Big 12 Runner of the Week during the 2008 season. Jones won the season-opening Baylor Twilight Invitational, and Bedell has claimed the team's best finish in each meet since. Both athletes earned All-Big 12 honors two weeks ago at the conference meet by recording Top 10 finishes. Bedell claimed third place overall, the highest finish by a Lady Bear since Sherri Smith won the individual title at the 1998 meet.
The Baylor women enter the meet ranked 18th in the USTFCCCA Division I Women's Cross Country Poll. The Lady Bears have been ranked as high as 14th nationally this season. Baylor is ranked second in the South Central Region.
Last season the Lady Bears placed second at the South Central Regional, while three Baylor runners earned all-region honors.
On the men's side, Jeff Sadler and Robbie Knorr lead the young Bears into the regional championship. Sadler has been Baylor's top finisher in four of the five meets this season, including a fifth-place overall finish at the Baylor Twilight Invitational and a ninth-place showing at the Texas A&M Invitational. Knorr, a sophomore from Livermore, Calif., has scored in all five meets this season, including Top 20 finishes at the Baylor Twilight and the Texas A&M Invitational.
The men's team is currently ranked 12th in the South Central Region and has been ranked as high as fifth in the regional rankings according to the USTFCCCA.
Last season the men's team finished in sixth place at the region meet held in Fayetteville, Ark.
Baylor hosted the NCAA South Central Regional for four straight years from 2003 to 2006. During that span, the women's team recorded three second-place finishes, and finished third once. In 2005, Brittany Brockman won the individual title at the region meet. The men's squad tallied three seventh-place finishes at the Baylor-hosted regional meet, with a 12th-place finish during the 2005 season.
The 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Indiana State University on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.
