WACO, Texas - Victoria Henson connected on 18 kills, and Jen Malcom added 14 kills as Iowa State rallied to defeat Baylor 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon at the Ferrell Center. The Bears drop their first home match after winning its first nine home contests this season.
"We came out strong in the first set, but then things got tough and we started playing tentatively," said head coach Jim Barnes. "Once we started struggling, we didn't react well and didn't have anyone step up."
Katie Sanders led the way for Baylor with 13 kills, while Briana Tolbert added nine kills for the Bears. Taylor Barnes added 36 set assists and tallied two service aces.
Sanders and Anna Breyfogle also tallied two service aces, while Allison King recorded a match-high 24 digs. Breyfogle and Tolbert each added four total blocks for Baylor.
Baylor won the opening set, recording 14 kills and forcing seven Iowa State hitting errors. The Cyclones found their groove, averaging 15.6 kills per set for the remainder of the match.
"We lost some energy after the first set," said Sanders. "We slowed down and lost our focus. The rest of the match we would get behind and try to make a comeback, but we should have been pushing during the whole set."
With the win, Iowa State improves to 11-7 overall, 3-4 in the Big 12 Conference. Baylor falls to 12-5 on the season, 4-3 in conference. The Bears return to action on Wednesday night as Baylor travels to face second-ranked Nebraska at 7 p.m.
