The Baylor football team continued to polish its offensive and defensive game plans for Saturday's season-opener at 22nd-ranked TCU with a two-hour full-pad workout on the grass practice fields Wednesday afternoon at Floyd Casey Stadium.
"I was very please with practice today," said Baylor head coach Guy Morriss. "The tempo was good, the intensity was good and the focus was good. It came at a good time. They were really focused today which was good to see. We are just repping the whole package right now."
Baylor's 74-man travel squad for Saturday's game is expected to include 10 true freshman and nearly all of them are expected to contribute on the Bears' special teams units against the Horned Frogs. True freshmen expected to travel this weekend include PK Shea Brewster, WR Krys Buerck, P Derek Epperson, LB Chris Francis, SS Antonio Johnson, DT Rex McDougald, FS V.J. McElroy, CB Cliff Odom, LB Earl Patin and WR Andrew Sumpter.
"These guys will all help us on special teams," Morriss said. "Most of these guys will contribute on special teams and that's an area we really need to improve in and they can certainly help us do that. There's not a lot of schemes and thinking involved on those. These guys can run and we are going to use them. Some of our starters will do some special teams work, but the better these freshmen can play and the more of them we can put on the field, it saves your every down scrimmage player a little more."
The Bears will scale back their workout on Thursday, then hold a walk through practice in Waco Friday afternoon between making the trek to Fort Worth. Kickoff for the nationally televised (CSTV) game between Baylor and TCU is set for 5:06 p.m. at Amon Carter Stadium.
Note: Sophomore offensive Thad Boatner (right knee strain) and freshman linebacker Chris Francis (left knee strain) missed Wednesday's practice.
