Baylor opens the 2007 volleyball season at the University at Buffalo Classic Friday and Saturday at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. The Bears face the homestanding Bulls in the opener Friday, followed by North Carolina and Stony Brook Saturday. The audio broadcast of all three matches can be heard on BaylorBears.com.
The Bears have won nine of their last 11 openers, including last year against UC-Davis. Baylor will be facing all three opponents for the first time in program history.
Five starters return from last season - senior libero Kristen Schramek along with four sophomores in setter Taylor Barnes, middle blocker Anna Breyfogle and outside hitters Katie Sanders and Kelsey Smith. The Bears have just one other senior, middle blocker Amanda Modglin who is making a position change from setter.
Barnes earned preseason accolades as she was named to the preseason All-Big 12 team last week. She recorded the only two triple-doubles in conference action in 2006, and led the league in services aces as a freshman. Barnes set a school and Big 12 record with 11 service aces against Missouri. She also tied an NCAA record by serving 12 consecutive points to start the match against Louisiana-Monroe. Breyfogle is the leading returner in kills, blocks, and hitting percentage, while Sanders led the Bears in kills in every match during the spring season.
The Bears brought in a recruiting class ranked in the top 40 in the nation, consisting of five heralded freshmen, and a junior college All-American. Baylor returns to action in its home opening tournament, the Clarion Invitational Friday and Saturday, August 31-Sept. 1 against Stephen F. Austin, Mississippi State and Oregon.
