After practicing in shorts for the first two days of spring camp, the Baylor football team put the pads on for Friday afternoon's workout on Floyd Casey Stadium's grass practice fields.
"Defensively we were pretty intense and moving around pretty good," said fifth-year Baylor head coach Guy Morriss. "I was really pleased with their work.
"I think we are thinking a little bit right now [offensively]. We've got a lot of new, young kids rolling in and out of the lineup and we are having some busts, and some mental mistakes. But, I think they'll relax and catch up [to the defense] in the next couple of days."
Much of the attention on the offensive side of the ball during spring practice will be focused on the Bears' five-man battle at quarterback. Senior Michael Machen, a Kent State transfer, impressed Morriss with his performance Friday.
"I thought Michael (Machen) did a good job moving the club," Morriss said. "He didn't get rattled too much. Michael is a guy who is pretty poised. He kept everyone calm in the huddle and put a pretty good little drive together down to about the 25 and then we reversed the field.
"I think it is just a matter of needing a little more time to rep, rep, rep and they'll get it."
The Bears will complete their first week of spring practice with a Saturday morning workout, before taking Sunday off.
Notes: Senior inside receiver Jordan Adams will likely miss all of spring ball while recovering from off-season knee surgery, while sophomore wide receiver David Gettis is sidelined with mono ... Redshirt freshman cornerback Antareis Bryan has yet to practice, as he recovers from dislocating his kneecap.
