Bears Unveil 2007 Football Signees

WACO, Texas -- Baylor University head football coach Guy Morriss announced Wednesday the signing of 27 players to National Letters of Intent for the 2007-08 academic year. Included in Morriss' fifth Baylor recruiting class are 22 high school standouts and five junior college transfers. In addition, quarterback Michael Machen graduated early from Kent State and transferred into the Baylor program and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

"This is by far the best recruiting class we've signed in the five years we've been at Baylor," said Morriss. "I believe that each of classes has improved and this group will further strengthen the foundation of our program for years to come."

"I believe that the two areas we really need to improve in, along the offensive and defensive lines, have been fortified with some men who can come in and contribute early in their careers," he added.

Included in the 2007 class are 12, 3-star and 1, four-star Rivals.com recruits. The class also includes three players whose fathers earned All-America honors at Baylor--LB Chris Francis (son of James Francis, 1986-89), Athlete V.J. McElroy (son of Vann McElroy, 1978-81) and DE Matt Singletary (son of Mike Singletary, 1977-80).

Three of the five junior college transfers--OL James Barnard, LB Leon Freeman and QB John Weed, are currently enrolled at Baylor and will go through spring practice along with Machen, which begins March 20. In addition, DT Rex McDougald graduated early from Iola (Texas) High School and enrolled at Baylor in Jan., 2007 to begin his collegiate career early.
