CHICAGO - Seventh-seeded Baylor lost in the quarterfinals to second-seed Ohio State, 4-2, Saturday at the USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships at the Midtown Tennis Club.
Ohio State won the doubles point by winning matches at the top two spots. Drew Eberly and Justin Kronauge downed 44th-rated Matt Brown and David Galic, 8-6 at court one while the 22nd-ranked duo of Devin Mullings and Chris Klingemann defeated Lars Poerschke and Matija Zgaga, 8-3.
Kronauge gained the Buckeyes their second points when he posted a win at No. 5 over BU freshman Dominik Mueller. Michal Kokta got Baylor on the board with a three-set win over Koniecko. It was the second straight match that Kokta, a senior, dropped the first set then rebounded to earn the victory. Ohio State picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 6 to seal the win. Baylor senior Matija Zgaga claimed a victory over Klingemann, ranked No. 46, at No. 4.
Baylor won the Team Indoor title the last time the event was in Chicago in 2005. With the loss, the Bears are now 13-5 in six appearances at the National Team Indoor.
The Bears, 7-2 on the season, will face sixth-seeded Illinois on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Baylor/Illinois series is tied at 2-2. Illinois lost in the quarterfinals to UCLA.
"Ohio State was better than us today. We had several opportunities to win close sets and simply weren't good enough to get it done. Our match tomorrow with Illinois will be another big opportunity for our team," said head coach Matt Knoll.
