Men's Tennis Blanks Stanford 7-0

WACO, Texas - The No. 8 Baylor men's tennis team defeated No. 27 Stanford, 7-0, Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center in the first annual HP Cup.

Due to weather concerns, singles matches contested first.

Baylor swept all six single matches in two sets to claim the victory. No. 53 Dominik Mueller took the first win for the Bears defeating Kevin Kaiser 6-4, 6-0. Matija Zgaga followed shortly after with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Eric McKean. Michael Kokta, ranked No. 17 and playing at No. 1 defeated Matt Bruch 6-1, 6-4. Denes Lukacs, ranked No. 66 clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-4, 6-2 downing of Paul Morrissey.

No. 56 Lars Poerschke picked up another win for the Bears in the No. 2 spot after defeating Richard Wire 6-4, 6-4. Trailing 0-3 in the second set, Matt Brown came back to defeat Blake Muller 6-1, 7-5.

In doubles action, the Bears added to their advantage as David Galic and Poerschke defeated Stanford's duo of Bruch and Muller 8-4. Baylor's team of Kokta and Lukacs picked up another point for the Bears with an 8-5 win over Wire and Morrissey while Attila Bucko and Mueller followed defeating Stanford's McKean and Jeff Zeller.

"I thought the guys played really well today, especially after such an emotional win yesterday (over No. 3 UCLA). We were extremely proud to be winners of the first annual HP Cup,"said head coach Matt Knoll.

The Bears now 6-1 on the season will return to action as they travel to the USTA/ITA National Men's Tennis Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Illinois at the Midtown Tennis Club in Chicago Feb. 16-19. The Bears will face Duke at 2 p.m. (Central time) Friday, Feb. 16.

With the loss Stanford drops to 0-4 on the season.
