LUBBOCK, Texas - Katie Sanders recorded 15 kills and Haley Thomas tied her career-high with nine total blocks as Baylor swept Texas Tech 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-24) for its fourth straight victory on Wednesday night at the United Spirit Arena.
The sweep for Baylor is the first in conference play since a 3-0 sweep of Kansas last season in Waco. The Bears last conference sweep on the road came during the 2001 season as Baylor defeated Oklahoma 3-0 in Norman.
Ashlie Christenson added 11 kills for Baylor on .450 hitting. In two matches against Texas Tech this season, Christenson has recorded 27 kills on .545 hitting.
Thomas recorded nine total blocks, including five block assists in game one. Anna Breyfogle, the Big 12 leader in blocks per game, added eight blocks for the Bears.
The Bears recorded 14 team blocks, good for a 4.67 blocks per game average. Baylor entered the match blocking just over three balls per game.
Lubbock native Kelsey Smith tallied a career-high four service aces and added four digs for the Bears. Taylor Barnes led the defense for Baylor with 11 digs.
Baylor got out to a quick six-point lead in game one off solid net play by Thomas and Breyfogle. The Bears held a five-point lead for a majority of game one, pulling away at the end to take game one 30-24.
Sanders tallied four kills for the Bears, but Baylor able to record five total blocks in game one. Thomas had a hand in all five blocks, while Breyfogle added five block assists.
The Bears jumped out to another quick lead after ten serves of game two, but a strong push by the Red Raiders gave Texas Tech the lead. Tech extended its lead to as many as eight at 22-14. With Texas Tech holding a 25-18 lead, Baylor won 12 of the next 13 points, including 10 straight to close out game two by a score of 30-26.
The Bears added three more blocks in game two, while Sanders tallied eight kills. Christenson added seven kills for the Bears, and Kelsey Smith and Christenson added service aces in game two.
In game three the two teams battled for the first 30 serves. Baylor got out in front on the strength of back-to-back blocks by Breyfogle and Thomas after Texas Tech cut the lead to just one at 20-19. Consecutive service aces for Sanders stretched Baylor's lead to 28-22, and the Bears held on for the 30-24 win.
Baylor returns to action on Wednesday as the Bears return home to play host to Kansas at 6:30 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
