On November 1, 1997 the Baylor Bears shocked the Texas Longhorns, defeating them 23-21 on Homecoming at Floyd Casey Stadium. Longhorn running back Ricky Williams rushed for 241 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as running back Darrell Bush and the Bears combined for 241 yards rushing of their own.

Baylor received the opening kick and Bush opened up play with a 65-yard run to the Texas 18 yard-line. Running back Elijah Burkins then finished off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Texas answered with a Williams touchdown run after Baylor quarterback Jeff Watson threw an interception at the Baylor 27 yard-line. The Longhorns scored again in the second quarter on a seven-play, 71-yard touchdown drive consisting of five Williams runs and one pass by "Little Earl."

Baylor would close out the half with two Matt Bryant field goals, including one with time expiring. The Bears went into the break down 14-13.

Coming out of the break, the Bears' defense held strong, intercepting two James Brown passes to keep the Longhorns off the scoreboard. The strong defensive play also put the Bears in position to score, as Matt Bryant kicked his third consecutive field goal, and Watson threw a touchdown pass to Bradley Domel to make the score 23-14.

"I told them yesterday to just keep playing, playing hard, and something good would happen," said Baylor coach Dave Roberts. "It's nice to win. It's been a while."

In the fourth, Baylor pinned the Horns at their own 5 yard-line, but on the second play of their drive, Williams ran an 87-yard touchdown to put Texas within two. The Horns received one last shot in the waning minutes, but kicker Phil Dawson was unable to connect on a 54-yard field goal.

"Give a lot of credit to Dave Roberts and the Baylor team," said Texas coach John Mackovic. "They came out and jumped on us early."

The win marks the last time Baylor defeated Texas. The 1997 Bears finished the season 2-9 in Dave Roberts first season.
