BAYLOR SOCCER TRAVELS TO PLAY IN PORTLAND NIKE INVITATIONAL
WACO, Texas - The Baylor soccer team concludes a five-game road swing as the Bears travel to Portland, Ore., to play in the Portland Nike Invitational. The Bears open by facing defending national champion and No. 6 Portland on Friday, Sept. 8, at 9:00 p.m. before facing Washington on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 2:00 p.m.
"It is a great opportunity for our team to go out and face the defending national champion," head coach George Van Linder said. "We are expecting a great atmosphere and a hostile environment which is a great chance for our young team to understand what its like to play in places similar to what we will have to face throughout the conference season."
Baylor enters the contest after going 0-1-1 at the Big 12-Big Ten Challenge this past weekend. The Bears tied Indiana, 1-1, in double overtime before falling to No. 21 Purdue, 2-0. Senior Anna Schuch scored the Bears goal against the Hoosiers as the senior leads Baylor with one goal, one assist and three points on the year.
No. 6 Portland hosts Baylor in its home opener as the Pilots will honor last year's national championship team prior to the contest with the Bears. Last season, Portland defeated Baylor, 4-1, in the only prior meeting between the two schools. The Pilots enter the contest with a record of 2-1-1 as Portland's only loss on the season came at the hands of No. 2 Florida State.
The Pilots are led by Megan Rapinoe who leads the team with five goals and 12 points on the season.
Washington enters with a record of 3-1-0 on the season after splitting a pair of games at the Husky Invitational. The Huskies only loss of the season came at the hands of UW-Milwaukee while Washington has posted victories over Hawai'i, Oklahoma and Rhode Island.
The Huskies are led by Shuree Hyatt, who has posted two goals on the season while Washington goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen has recorded an impressive 0.75 goals against average on the season.
The meeting between Washington and Baylor will be the first between the two schools.
