Sept. 29, 2006
Former Baylor standout linebacker Ray Berry will be honored as a Baylor Football Legend during the Bears' Sept. 30 game against Kansas State at Floyd Casey Stadium.
An Abilene, Texas, native who was inducted into the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005, Berry lettered for coach Grant Teaff's Bears in 1983-84-85-86 and was named to the school's 1980-89 All-Decade team. The two-time All-Southwest Conference honoree (1985 and 1986) capped his career by earning MVP honors in Baylor's 21-9 victory over Colorado in the Bluebonnet Bowl.
Berry still ranks among Baylor's all-time leaders in total tackles (No. 2, 380), solo tackles (No. 3, 231), assisted tackles (No. 3, 149) and sacks (No. 9, nine). He went on to play in both the Senior Bowl and the East/West Shrine All-Star Game and was selected by Dave Campbell as one of Baylor's Top 50 football players of the 20th century.
Selected in the second round of the 1987 NFL Draft with the 44th pick by the Minnesota Vikings, Berry spent six seasons in professional football with the Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. He lives in his hometown of Abilene where he works in the family business.
