Baylor Cross Country Hosts Bear Relays

WACO, Texas. - - The Baylor cross country teams will open the 2006 season when the Bears host the Bear Relays at the Baylor Intramural Fields on Friday, Sept. 1, at 6:30 p.m. for the women and 7 p.m. for the men. The meet is in a relay format and consists of teams of two individuals competing in a relay-style race. The women will be running an 8,000 meter race, while the men will run in a 12,000 meter race.
The Baylor women return eight letterwinners from last season including Brittany Brockman, who claimed the NCAA South Central Regional individual title and her third straight All-Big 12 honor. The Bears also return All-Region honorees Monique Ortega, Brittany McGuire, Lauren Hagans and Lyndsy Bedell. Erin Bedell, the NCAA Regional runner-up, will also be returning after competing at the World Junior Cross Country Championship in Japan and the World Junior Track and Field Championship in China. Brockman, who is recovering from an injury, and Erin Bedell, who is recovering from an exhausting spring and summer schedule, will not compete in the opener.
The Baylor men return 14 letterwinners from the 2005 season including seniors Rob Morrow, Bo Price, Mitch Sanders and Cody Wells, who all redshirted last year. Three of the Bears' top finishers last season, Jacob Jones, Rey Hinojosa and John Wenhold, also return for the 2006 season.
Baylor swept the men's and women's titles last year at the Bear Relays with Brockman and Hagans claiming the women's title and Morrow and Price claiming the men's title.
Results will be posted on BaylorBears.com as soon as they are available. The Bears return to action Sat., Sept. 9, at the North Texas Invitational in Denton, Texas.
