WACO, Texas - The McLennan County Collaborative Abstinence Project was held at the Ferrell Center on Tuesday morning. Students from middle schools in the area were present to hear keynote speaker, former NBA player A.C. Green, and Baylor quarterback Shawn Bell.
Green discussed his experiences in transitioning from college basketball to professional basketball and related it to the audience's transition from middle school to high school. He emphasized the need to stay strong, earn respect, and make good decisions.
"A lot of my teammates, after a game, like to go out and party... I liked to go bowling, go to a movie, or get some frozen yogurt," said Green.
Green talked about his experiences during Magic Johnson's retirement, due to his contraction of the HIV virus, and said that many players rushed out to get tested after the news went out. However, because Green chose to live a healthy lifestyle, he did not have to be too concerned personally about the situation.
"The decisions you make, dictate the life that you lead," declared Green.
Shawn Bell talked about how his parents were his role models and led him in the right direction. He emphasized the importance of character to the audience.
"I challenge you to not only be good [at what you do], but more importantly, I challenge you to be a good person," stated Bell.
The McLennan County Collaborative Abstinence Project is a local organization that seeks to educate the public about the consequences of risky behaviors including sex, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and violence. The Project's primary mission is to empower the youth of Waco to make the right decisions and to live healthy lifestyles.
Baylor athletes and coaches volunteer in the community in their free time. To request the appearance of an athlete or a coach for a charity event, please contact the Athletic Marketing Department at (254) 710-3073.
