WACO, Texas - The No. 7 Baylor men's tennis team overpowered No. 43 Texas Tech tonight to earn their first Big 12 of the season. The Bears increased their record to 13-4, 1-0 while Tech fell to 11-6, 0-1.
After a one hour rain delay, doubles got underway at the Baylor Tennis Center at 7 p.m. Baylor's team of Will Ward and Matt Brown quickly took down Teddy DiBlasi and Sinisa Markovic 8-3 to start things off for the Bears. Matija Zgaga and David Galic defeated Adrian Prpic and Christian Rojmar 8-4 to secure the doubles point for Baylor. The No. 49 ranked team of Lars Poerschke and Michal Kokta finished the doubles sweep defeating Tech's Dimitrio Martinez and Michael Breler 8-3.
In sinlges, Kokta quickly overpowered Tech's Markovic handing the Raider a 6-1, 6-1 loss. With the win, Kokta ties his record long winning streak of 10 straight matches. He has not lost a match since February 17.
The winning continued for Baylor with Brown making quick work of Tech's DiBlasi in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Poerschke played well enough to make his father Wolfgang proud and assured the Bear's victory defeating Martinez in the No. 2 position 6-4, 6-1. Zgaga earned the final point for Baylor defeating No. 112 Prpic in a three-set, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0 victory.
Ward and Portnov were the only losses on the day. Ward fell to Tech's singles record leader, Rojmar, 7-6, 6-2. Portnov couldn't hang on to the second set tie-breaker and fell to Breler 6-4, 7-6 (7).
Baylor has won four straight matches at home and looks to continue the winning on the road next weekend when the Bears will travel to Norman, Okla. to take on the Sooners Friday, April 7 at 6 p.m.
