Thirteen different Bears caught passes to highlight the Baylor football team's second major scrimmage of spring practice Saturday morning at Floyd Casey Stadium. Saturday's workout was the 11th of 15 NCAA-allowed spring sessions for the Bears, who will wrap up spring practice with four sessions next week.
"Both sides kind of started out a little sluggish (in practice), but, they picked it up good in team," said Baylor coach Guy Morriss. "I think they enjoy competing against each other. I thought they finished pretty good for the day. I don't know if they were saving it for the scrimmage.
"The grind is beginning to wear them down a little bit, but overall I was pleased with how the day went," he added.
Senior running back Paul Mosley caught a scrimmage-best four passes for 13 yards, while sophomore wide receiver Thomas White hauled in three receptions for a scrimmage-best 68 yards and one touchdown, a 47-yard pass from junior tight end Terrance Parks.
All-told, the Baylor offense produced five scores on the day, three of which came during the red zone situation work. Fifth-year senior quarterback Shawn Bell completed 18 of 27 passes with one interception for 144 yards and two touchdowns, while redshirt freshman signal caller Blake Szymanski was 8 of 11 passing for 46 yards and one TD. Szymanski tossed a 14-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Joe Bennett to account for the other scoring play outside of the red zone work.
Junior running back Brandon Whitaker carried five times for 48 yards to lead the Baylor ground attack.
Baylor will practice three times (Monday at 7 p.m., Tuesday at 3 p.m. and Thursday at 9 a.m.) prior to next Saturday's 1 p.m. Green & Gold Spring Game at Floyd Casey Stadium. Prior to the Green & Gold Game, the Matthew Dove Letterwinners' Plaza, located on the east side of Floyd Casey Stadium, will be formally dedicated in a 12:30 p.m. ceremony. All Baylor practices are open to the public.
"In terms of adding things from a scheme standpoint, there's not a lot left to do," Morriss said. "We want to focus more on the details of what we already have in. They are starting to understand it (the new offense) and make adjustments on the run, which is good to see."
