Dec. 19, 2006
The Big 12 Conference unveiled its league-games only schedule for the 2008 through 2015 campaigns, Dec. 19. Each Big 12 institution will continue to play an eight-game conference schedule, with four home games and four away contests.
With Tuesday's announcement, Baylor now has finalized schedules through the 2009 football season and needs just one non-conference opponent in both 2010 and 2011 to complete those slates. In 2012, Baylor needs to finalize two non-conference games while it needs three opponents for 2013.
"These schedules represent a balance between very attractive games for our fans to enjoy and competition that will allow our football program to experience success," said Baylor Director of Athletics Ian McCaw. "We are in the process of finalizing the remaining open dates on our schedules through 2015."
Under Big 12 Conference guidelines, institutions may mutually agree to move games from the originally scheduled date with approval from the Conference office. In additional to institutional requests, it is anticipated that the league's television partners may request additional adjustments to the schedules.
In weeks when there are only 13 playing dates between Labor Day and Thanksgiving weekends, the Big 12 Directors of Athletics have implemented a split-week schedule for those seasons. That concept will allow the Big 12 to shift opening games over two weekends to create early season bye dates either prior to or just after the start of conference play, a provision which was overwhelmingly supported by the head football coaches.
While individual school adjustments have and could occur, the schedules were built in two-year increments. This means the 2008 and 2009 schedules are reversed from each other in terms of site and order (as are 2010/2011, 2012/2013 and 2014/2015) as originally scheduled. This provision also provides a balance in home/away openers and final games (prior to school adjustments). This had not been a provision of previous league schedules.
In another new wrinkle to the Big 12 scheduling process for the 2008-2015 cycle, all league teams will conclude their schedules against a divisional opponent. In addition to the current traditional season-ending games--Nebraska/Colorado, Texas/Texas A&M and Oklahoma/Oklahoma State; the Baylor/Texas Tech, Missouri/Kansas and Kansas State/Iowa State games were assigned automatically to the season's final playing weekend.
