COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Baylor soccer team exploded for three first-half goals while the defense excelled in the second half as the Bears snapped a 13-game road and neutral winless streak with a 3-0 victory over No. 17 Missouri in action at Walton Soccer Stadium. With the win, Baylor improves to 5-6-1, 2-2-0 in the Big 12 Conference while Missouri drops to 8-4-0, 0-3-0 in the league with the loss.
"It was a great win for the team today," head coach George Van Linder said. "We are playing our best soccer of the season right now and it was great to see our players come out and play a terrific match. The defense was amazing and our offense capitalized on every scoring opportunity."
Senior Anna Schuch scored an early goal to give the Bears all the scoring the team would need when the senior collected a rebound off a shot from freshman Lauren Weathers and drilled the ball into the back of the net in the seventh minute to give Baylor a 1-0 lead.
The Bears extended the lead in the 33rd minute when Amanda McGrath drilled a shot from 18 yards out to score her first goal of the season. McGrath's goal was set up by a shot by Carolyn Lynch that deflected off the goalie and rebounded to the sophomore at the top of the penalty box.
With only 90 seconds remaining in the first half, Missy McConnell put the game away as she headed in a pass from Pat Roscovius from six yards out to give the Bears a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Sporting a three-goal advantage, the Baylor defense did the rest of the work in the second half, holding the Tigers scoreless despite the fact Missouri held a 23-13 edge in shots and an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Holder was tremendous in net for Baylor as she collected eight saves in posting her fourth shutout victory of the season.
Mallory Forst took the loss for Missouri after making five saves in goal for the Tigers.
Schuch's goal was the 14th of her career as the senior became only the fourth player in school history to score at least five game-winning goals during her career.
Weathers collected her first career assist in the win as Baylor defeated a nationally-ranked opponent for the first time since a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 22 Texas during the 2004 season.
Baylor will return to action on Friday, Oct. 6, when the Bears travel to Nebraska to face the Huskers at 7:00 p.m.
