WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - Baylor's Matija Zgaga rebounded from a disappointing fall tennis season to breeze through the prestigious Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., to claim the singles championship.
The unranked junior from Maribor, Slovenia, won five matches to claim the tournament championship. En route to the title, Zgaga claimed victories over Stanford's Blake Muller , Chris Cloer of Florida State, UCLA's Jeremy Drean and Mathieu Deahine and fourth-ranked Matt Bruch of Stanford.
Lars Poerschke, Vladimir Portnov and Jon Reckewey also competed in the tournament. Reckewey suffered a first round loss to Stanford's James Pade while Portnov advanced to the second round before being eliminated by fourth-ranked Matt Bruch of Stanford. Poerschke, ranked No. 1 nationally, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by 75th-ranked Mathieu Dehaine of UCLA.
Reckewey and Portnov, playing together for the first time this season, dropped their first round match to UCLA's Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol. Zgaga and Poerschke, the tournament's top seeded duo, defaulted their second-round match to Chris Rasmussen and James Wan of Stanford.
