WACO, Texas - For the second consecutive match, Baylor gave a ranked team all it could handle as the Bears were turned away by No. 7 Missouri 3-0 (28-30, 25-30, 24-30) in Big 12 volleyball action Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center. Junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) led Baylor with 13 kills and added 16 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
Senior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) and senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) added 11 kills each for the Bears (9-6, 1-3 Big 12). Sophomore libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) had a match-high 22 digs, while senior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) added 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the year.
Jessica Vander Kooi had a match-high 15 kills to go with 11 digs, while Na Yang added 14 kills. Nicole Wilson pitched in with 11 digs, while Tatum Ailes led the Tigers (11-0, 5-0) with 20 digs.
Baylor jumped out to a 6-1 lead in game one behind the serve of LeBlanc and five consecutive kills by four different players. Missouri answered back to cut the lead to 8-7, but the Bears pushed away again to 17-12. The Tigers finally caught the Bears with four consecutive points to tie the game at 20 and took the lead for good with three straight to make it 28-25. Missouri held on to the game with a 30-28 decision. The Tigers hit .298 for the game, compared to .273 for the Bears.
The Bears held the lead early in game two as well, holding the advantage at 13-11, but the Tigers once again answered and took the lead for good at 18-14. Baylor got to within two at 27-25, but Missouri scored the final three points to take the game 30-25. The Tigers hit .350 in the game, while the Bears hit .293.
Missouri got off to the fast start in game three and led by as much as nine at 17-8 until the Bears regrouped and cut the lead to four at 18-14. Baylor would get no closer as Missouri clinched the match with a 30-24 win in the third game. The Tigers hit .220, while the Bears were held to .128.
Missouri outhit Baylor, .286-.231, for the night, and held a slight advantage in digs, 65-64. The Bears outblocked the Tigers, 7.0-4.0.
Baylor returns to action when it hits the road to take on top-ranked Nebraska Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Nebraska Coliseum in Lincoln, Neb.
