FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Baylor sophomore middle blocker Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) posted 13.0 blocks, the second-highest total in school history, and added five kills and three aces to lead the Bears to a 3-1 (30-18, 25-30, 30-25, 30-18) victory and a second-place finish in the Fiesta Bowl Volleyball Tournament Saturday at Rolle Activity Center.
Junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) led the Bears (9-3), hitting .560 with 15 kills, while senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) hit .520 with 14 kills. Both players were named to the all-tournament team.
Senior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) heated up late in the match and ended up with nine kills, while redshirt freshman Krystle Everett (Crandall, Texas) saw her first significant playing time, tallying three kills and a pair of blocks. Senior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) led the Bears with 10 digs, while sophomore libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) added nine.
Baylor scored six straight points to take a 17-12 lead in game one and never looked back, scoring the final seven points to win the game, 30-18. The Bears got four kills from Odion, three each from LeBlanc and Hamerly, three blocks by Modglin, who also had a pair of aces. The Bears hit .259 for the game, while the Lumberjacks hit only .107.
Game two remained close the entire way, then Northern Arizona jumped ahead 26-21 with a 7-1 run and held the Baylor off the rest of the way to even the match with a 30-25 decision. Northern Arizona hit .531 for the game, while the Bears hit .333.
Baylor scored five in a row to take a 12-7 lead in game three and traded points for most of the rest of the game until Northern Arizona scored five in a row to cut the lead to 26-25. A kill by Spriggs ended the rally and an ace by senior defensive specialist Maggie Chlebana (Calgary, Alberta) and a pair of blocks gave the Bears a 30-25 win.
The Bears stormed out to a 16-9 lead due in large part to their improved blocking, then pushed the lead to 20-11. Baylor was in control the rest of the way as it put the match away, 30-18.
Baylor hit .281 for the match, while Northern Arizona hit .213. The Lumberjacks outdug the Bears, 44-40, but the Bears outblocked them, 15.0-6.0.

Baylor lacked sharpness defensively as they were outdug, 63-50, in a 3-2 (19-30, 32-30, 31-33, 30-23, 12-15) loss to UTEP in the afternoon match.
Senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) hit .343 and led the Bears with 18 kills and six blocks. Junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had 15 kills and seven digs, while senior outside hitter Melanie Hamerly (Orange, Texas) added 10 kills. Sophomore libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) led Baylor defensively with 16 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Heather Marcus (Grand Prairie, Texas) added a career-high 10 digs.
Kari Stacy led UTEP with 25 kills, while Christine Murphy added 22. Brooke Peugh, Heather Brisnahan and Jessica Williams each posted double-digit kills for the Miners. Brittany Stowers recorded a match-high 21 digs.
With game one tied 15-15, UTEP went on a seven-point run to take control of the game. The Bears were out of sync the rest of the way as the Miners went on to a 30-19 win. UTEP hit .459 for the game, while Baylor hit only .175.
The Bears trailed 6-4, but came back to score six in a row to take a 10-6 lead. UTEP answered to tie the game at 12-12 and pulled away to 18-14. Baylor scored five straight points to go up 29-26 on an ace by junior outside hitter Deja Sweeney (Sacramento, Calif.), but UTEP came back with three in a row to tie the game at 29. Baylor closed out the game 32-30 on a dump kill by senior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and an ace by Marcus.
UTEP scored nine straight points to take an 11-2 lead in game three. The Miners pushed their lead to 20-10, but the Bears stormed back with a 9-1 run, then tied the game at 24 and took their first lead at 25-24 and got to game point at 29-27 on a solo block by Huston, but UTEP scored three straight to take a 30-29 lead. The two teams traded sideouts until the Miners were able to score two straight to win the game, 33-31.
Baylor evened up the match with a dominating performance in game four, outhitting UTEP .276-.081. The Bears got four kills from Odion and three from Hamerly in a 30-23 decision.
Both teams came out swinging in game five, but the Miners came out on top, 15-12. UTEP hit .500 for the game, while Baylor hit .364. Odion and Stacy each had five kills in the game to lead their respective teams.
The Bears return to Big 12 Conference play Wednesday when they host Iowa State at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
