WACO, Texas -- Amanda Lackey's penalty kick goal in the 42nd minute proved to be the difference as Stephen F. Austin posted a 1-0 victory over the Baylor soccer team in action at Betty Lou Mays Field. With the loss, Baylor falls to 1-1 on the season as Stephen F. Austin improved to 1-1 with the victory.
"We did not make the most of our opportunities tonight," head coach George Van Linder said. "There were points during the game where I thought Stephen F. Austin wanted it more than we did. Hopefully, we will learn from the loss and work hard as we prepare to face a couple of Big 10 opponents next weekend."
Throughout most of the first half, Baylor and Stephen F. Austin were unable to create many good scoring opportunities. However, the LadyJacks managed to get on the board late in the half when Stephen F. Austin was awarded a penalty kick.
With just over three minutes remaining in the half, Megan Spitzmueller managed to evade a Baylor defender and worked her way into the penalty area. Right before she managed to take a shot, she was tackled from behind as the referee awarded the LadyJacks a penalty kick.
Lackey shot the ball into the lower-left hand corner of the net past the outstretched arms of Baylor goalie Ashley Holder to give Stephen F. Austin a 1-0 lead.
The lead managed to hold up as Baylor was unable to register a goal in the final half. Baylor's best chance to score in the second half came in the 83rd minute when Amanda McGrath and Stephen F. Austin goalie Natascia Michalezki raced towards a loose ball 10 yards in front of the net. McGrath was able to get to the ball first; however, a sliding Michalezki was able to deflect the ball away as the Bears were unable to tie the game late.
Michalezki recorded the shutout win for the LadyJacks as she made six saves in the victory.
Holder took the loss for Baylor while making four saves on the night.
Baylor held a 13-12 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in shots on goal as senior Tiffany Boshers led the Bears attack with six shots on the night.
Baylor held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks; but, was unable to manage a corner kick in the second half.
The Bears will return to action on Friday, Sept. 2, at 7:00 p.m. when Baylor hosts Minnesota as a part of the Big 12-Big 10 Challenge.
