Hot and humid conditions didn't stop the 2005 Baylor football team from turning in what coach Guy Morriss termed the Bears' best workout of fall camp Sunday afternoon. It marked the Bears' eighth practice of fall camp and third in full pads.
"This was probably our best practice as a team (of camp)," said Morriss, whose team drilled for more than two hours in full pads on the grass practice fields. "It seemed like the light switch went on a little bit for the offense, we protected a lot better; ran, threw and caught it better, too.
Sunday marked the Bears' seventh-straight day on the practice field and the second in which the coaching staff hasn't added a new wrinkle into the mix.
"I think that helps (not adding something new to practice)," Morriss said. "We can just go back, review and start polishing. We've added about all we are going to add for awhile."
Junior Shawn Bell (China Spring, Texas) entered fall camp as the Bears' No. 1 signal caller and continues to battle sophomore Terrance Parks (Lufkin, Texas) and true freshman Blake Szymanski (Wichita Falls, Texas) in practice each day.
"I think Shawn (Bell) has been pretty sharp and you can tell that Terrance (Parks) missed a lot of the spring and part of fall camp," Morriss said. "It's hurt him (Parks) and he's got a little rust to get off, but he's coming around.
"I hope Terrance figures into the mix," he added. "Whether we play them both in the same game or not is yet to be determined."
Baylor has nine remaining practices before classes start Aug. 22. The Bears will hold two workouts each day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week with single sessions slated for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
"To me, it's just about grinding now and polishing up what we've got in and getting good at what's in," Morriss said. "I challenged them Saturday about the week ahead that we need to grind and the tempo has to be good. We've got to eat and sleep right so that we can come back out here and get the work we need to have."
The Bears will practice at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Monday and both workouts are open to the media and public.
