Coach Guy Morriss' Baylor football team will conclude spring practice with the 2005 Green & Gold game, April 23rd at 1 p.m. in Floyd Casey Stadium. Admission to the scrimmage is free, however, donations will be accepted for the Red Cross Local Heroes Campaign.
"We are looking forward to Saturday's scrimmage," said Morriss. "As a staff, we feel good about our progress this spring. This will be one more chance for us to evaluate our players before they head into final exams and our summer program."
After having his players draft the teams last spring, Morriss and his staff divided the squad this year. With sophomore QB Terrance Parks sidelined by an injury to his index finger on his throwing hand, junior Shawn Bell will direct the Gold team offense, while a pair of walk-ons, senior Mark Murphy and redshirt freshman Jason Lovvorn, will guide the Green squad. Parks is one of 10 Bears who will miss Saturday's scrimmage due to injury. Complete squad rosters are included with this release.
This year's game format will again feature an alumni flag football game with a running clock for the scrimmage's first quarter beginning at 1 p.m. on the stadium turf. Baylor alums slated to return to Waco this weekend include Fred Miller, Gary Baxter and Justin Snow, all of whom are currently playing in the National Football League. The Bears will then pick-up the game for the final three quarters and should run between 100 and 120 plays on the afternoon, according to Morriss.
"This year's game will be similar to what we've done in the past," Morriss said. "We've got a great group of alums coming back and look forward to watching them have some fun for a quarter, then we'll go live (except on the quarterback) for the final three quarters. We're going to turn them loose and let them get after it a bit, but we'll also get some situational work in, which will be good, too. It should be a fun afternoon."
Saturday's Green & Gold game will feature Central Texas radio and TV celebrities. The honorary coaches for the Gold squad will be Darren and Chrissy from Waco's 97.5 FM and Rob and Beth from Waco's 92.9 FM. The Green honorary coaches are KWTX's Matt Iazzetti and Dan Ingham, KXXV's Vince Erickson and KCEN's Kris Radcliffe.
Fans attending the Green & Gold game are asked to sit on the West sideline (press box side) at Floyd Casey Stadium. The East sideline stands will be closed as construction began earlier this week on the expansion of Grant Teaff Plaza. Fans may enter Floyd Casey Stadium at gate 5 on the stadium's southwest corner.
Prior to the scrimmage, beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the field, some members of the Baylor football team will participate in a clinic for members of the school's Cub Club. Children ages 5-12 will be able to join the Cub Club at the gate and participate in the clinic.
Saturday's spring game is just one event in a busy day for Baylor Athletics. The annual Michael Johnson Invitational will be held beginning with field events at 9 a.m. and running events at Noon and event finals at 6 p.m. at Baylor's Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex. A special presentation recognizing Baylor track and field legends Clyde Hart and Jack Patterson will be held at the complex beginning at 11 a.m.
In addition to the football game and track meet, the No. 8 Baylor softball team closes out its home season with a two-game series against No. 17 Missouri this weekend at Getterman Stadium. The Lady Bears and Tigers will square off at 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday in Waco.
Notes: Baylor completed its 14th spring workout on Thursday afternoon in helmets and shorts ... Scouts Inc./ESPN.com's mock draft has Baylor defensive end Khari Long being selected in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Long, who would be the first Bear selected in the NFL Draft since DT Ethan Kelley was taken in the seventh round of the 2003 draft and only the third Baylor player chosen in the last six drafts, finished fourth on the 2004 squad in tackles (tops among Baylor d-linemen) with 58 stops. He led the squad in QB hurries (eight), was No. 2 (tie) in sacks (2) and No. 3 in TFL with eight. ... Baylor opens its 2005 season on Sept. 3 at SMU, then faces Samford a week later in its 2005 home opener.
