NORMAN, Okla. - Baylor struggled offensively, being held to a season-low .025 hitting percentage, in a 3-1 (14-30, 30-22, 17-30, 19-30) loss at Oklahoma in Big 12 volleyball action Saturday night at McCasland Field House.
Junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) led the Bears (14-16, 5-13 Big 12) with eight kills and became the 11th player in Baylor history to reach 1,000 kills for her career. LeBlanc and senior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) each had a team-high 11 digs. Senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) added seven kills and five blocks, while junior middle Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) had six kills and seven blocks.
Sarah Weiland led Oklahoma (7-20, 2-16) with 22 kills, seven digs and seven blocks, while Eliane Santos added 15 kills and 11 blocks. Joanna Schmitt had 12 kills and nine digs, while Gabriela Tonon had 10 kills and seven digs.
Baylor got off to a horrible start as Oklahoma capitalized on the Bears' shaky passing and scored the first nine points of the match and 13 of the first 14. The Sooners took their biggest lead of the game with a four-point run to make it 27-10 and closed out the game, 30-14. Oklahoma hit .405 for the game, while holding Baylor to -.083.
The Bears regrouped and jumped out to a 9-5 lead, which the Sooners promply cut to one. Baylor regained control by going up 14-9 and took a timeout when Oklahoma got within 15-12. After the break, the Bears scored five straight to take a 20-12 lead, but the Sooners answered back with five of their own to make it 20-17. The Bears blocking set the tone, as they recorded six, and hit .143 while holding the Sooners to -.050.
Oklahoma took an 11-5 lead with a five-point run in game three and another four put run gave the Sooners a 15-7 lead. The Sooners pushed their lead to 13 and closed out the game by the same margin, 30-17. Oklahoma hit .325 for the game, while Baylor hit .000.
The Sooners broke a 10-10 tie with six straight points in game four and upped the lead to 20-13. The Bears responded by scoring four straight to cut the lead to 20-17, but Oklahoma scored five of the next six then the last five to clinch the match, 30-19.
Oklahoma hit .245, while Baylor was held to .025 and the Sooners outdug the Bears, 54-43. Baylor outblocked Oklahoma, 13.0-12.5.
The Bears return to action when they hit the road to face Kansas State Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Ahearn Fieldhouse in Manhattan, Kan.
