Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Nebraska

WACO, Texas - Baylor was outmatched as No. 1 Nebraska hit .422 to put the Bears away, 3-0 (30-18, 30-19, 30-21), and remain unbeaten in Big 12 volleyball action Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.

Baylor sophomore setter Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) came in for relief midway through game two and sparked the Bears' offense with a career-high 23 assists, while adding a pair of digs and a pair of blocks. Junior middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) led Baylor (14-15, 5-12 Big 12) with nine kills and four blocks, while senior outside hitters Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas), who was celebrating her 22nd birthday, and Melanie Hamerly (Orange, Texas) had seven kills each. Junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had a match-high 12 digs, while junior libero Deja Sweeney (Sacramento, Calif.) and senior defensive specialist Maggie Chlebana (Calgary, Alberta) added seven each.

Sarah Pavan led Nebraska (26-0, 17-0) with 14 kills, while Christina Houghtelling added 12 kills and eight digs. Melissa Elmer pitched in with nine kills and five blocks, while Jordan Larson led the Cornhuskers with nine digs.

Baylor led 7-4 in game one, but Nebraska used a five-point run to take the lead for good. Another four-point run gave the Cornhuskers a 17-10 lead and scored the last five points of the game to win 30-18. Nebraska hit .472, while Baylor hit .000.

Nebraska jumped out to an 11-4 lead in game two and went up 18-11 after a four-point run. The Cornhuskers pushed the advantage to 27-18 and scored the final three points to take the game 30-19. Nebraska hit identical to game one at .472, while the Bears hit .222.

Nebraska broke a 7-7 tie with a three-point run and scored five straight to go up 16-9. The Cornhuskers led by as many as 10 before clinching the match, 30-21. Nebraska hit .324, while Baylor hit .094.

The Cornhuskers outhit the Bears .422 to .110 and outblocked them, 8.0-4.0. Baylor outdug Nebraska, 41-37.

The Bears return to action when they hit the road to face Oklahoma Saturday at 7 p.m. at McCasland Field House in Norman, Okla.
