WACO, Texas -- The Baylor soccer team scored two first half goals and tied a season high with 26 shots as the Bears cruised to a 3-1 win over Texas Tech in action at Betty Lou Mays Field. With the win, Baylor improves to 4-11-1 on the season, 2-6 in the conference as Texas Tech falls to 1-15-0, 0-7 in conference play.
"I think it was one of the more complete games we have played all year," head coach George Van Linder said. "The team wanted to perform well for the seniors on the squad and they came out ready to play. Hopefully, we can continue to play well as we still have a chance at qualifying for the conference tournament."
Baylor jumped on the board early when freshman Amanda McGrath scored in the 13th-minute to give the Bears the lead. Senior Brittani Zonker crossed a ball into the penalty box that was headed by Anna Schuch. The goalie deflected the shot out to the top of the box, where McGrath corralled the loose ball and chipped it over the goalkeeper's head for the first goal of the game.
The Bears would extended the lead to two goals when senior Tiffany Boshers took a pass from Margaret Kaderli and beat the Texas Tech goalie in the 17th-minute to give Baylor a 2-0 lead. Boshers' goal gives her four on the season and 22 for her career, tying her with Ginny Rosario-Tull for fourth on Baylor's all-time list.
After Karen Stephens scored early in the second half for Texas Tech to cut the lead to one, McGrath scored her second goal of the game in the 52nd-minute to put the game away. Off a free kick from Jennifer Martin, Boshers launched a shot that deflected off the Red Raider keeper and over to McGrath, who easily put the ball in the net for her team leading fifth goal of the season.
With three points in the contest, Boshers moved into fourth on Baylor's all-time list with 57 points for her career.
Baylor controlled play throughout as the Bears out-shot the Red Raiders 26-10 on the match and had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
Boshers had a season high 11 shots in the victory as the Bears remained alive in their quest to secure a berth at the Big 12 Conference Tournament.
Ashley Holder made two saves in goal for the Bears to pick up the victory. Senior Kristin Weegar, who replaced Holder at halftime, also made two saves in goal in the win.
Megan Knauss took the loss for the Red Raiders, making five saves while allowing two goals on the night.
The game took place on "Senior Night" as six Baylor seniors were honored during a pre-match ceremony: Boshers, Kandyce Farr, Martin, Bethany Vick DuBose, Weegar and Zonker.
Baylor will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1:00 p.m. when the Bears face Colorado to close out the home portion of the schedule.
