Volleyball Bounces Back With Win Over Oklahoma

WACO, Texas - Baylor junior middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) hit .433 with a match-high 16 kills, one shy of her career high, and six blocks to lead the Bears to a 3-1 (30-23, 21-30, 30-26, 30-28) victory over Oklahoma to snap a six-match losing streak in Big 12 Conference volleyball action Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.

Junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) added 13 kills and a match-high 13 digs for her seventh double-double of the season for the Bears (10-9, 2-6 Big 12), while senior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) hit .333 with 13 kills. Senior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and senior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) each matched Guilliard-Young with six blocks, while sophomore libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) matched LeBlanc with 13 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Heather Marcus (Grand Prairie, Texas) had a career-high four service aces, leading the Bears to a season-high 11 on the night, and added eight digs.

Joanna Schmitt and Eliane Santos each had 14 kills to lead the Sooners (5-12, 0-8) and Santos posted 10 blocks. Anna Stadel had 11 kills, while Anna Monsen led Oklahoma with 12 digs.

Oklahoma went on a five-point run to take a 10-7 lead in game one and remained ahead at 13-11. The Bears then ripped off an 11-1 run mainly behind the serve of Huston to take control of the game at 22-14. The Sooners scored five straight to get closer but the Bears scored the final two points to put the game away, 30-23. Baylor hit .211 for the game, while holding Oklahoma to .075.

Oklahoma took advantage of Baylor's offensive woes and jumped out to a 14-10 lead in game two, then went on a 7-1 run to take a 21-11 lead. Baylor crept back to within six, but never really threatened as the Sooners evened the match at a game apiece with a 30-21 decision. Oklahoma hit .353 for the game and held Baylor to .000.

Game three was tight until the midpoint with the two teams tied 15-15. The Bears then scored four straight to take a 19-15 lead, but the Sooners cut the lead to two at 23-21. The Bears regained control with back-to-back points and held on for a 30-26 win. Baylor hit .314 and Oklahoma hit .190.

Game four was much like game three as Oklahoma held a 13-12 lead, but Baylor scored three straight points to go up 16-13. The Bears seemed to put the match away with a three-point run capped by an ace by LeBlanc to put them up 25-19, but the Sooners stormed back with six straight to tie the game at 25. The game remained tied at 27 and Baylor scored back-to-back points to get to match point. After Oklahoma sided out, LeBlanc put the match away with a kill for a 30-28 victory.

Oklahoma hit .226 for the match, while Baylor hit only .205. The Sooners also outblocked the Bears 15.5-12.5, but the Bears outdug them, 50-45. Baylor had its 11 service aces and only seven service errors, compared to six aces and nine service errors by the Sooners.

Baylor returns to action when it hosts No. 20 Kansas State Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Ferrell Center prior to the Baylor-Nebraska football game at 6 p.m. at Floyd Casey Stadium. Fans who present tickets to the football game at the volleyball match will be admitted free.
