Volleyball Falls on Road to No. 1 Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. - Baylor struggled with its serve receive, leading to easy points and game-breaking runs for top-ranked Nebraska, as the Huskers cruised to a 3-0 (30-21, 30-17, 30-18) victory in Big 12 Conference volleyball action Saturday night at Nebraska Coliseum.

Junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) led the Bears (9-7, 1-4 Big 12) with nine kills and eight digs, while senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) added seven kills. Senior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) had six kills, while sophomore middle blocker Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) had four kills and no errors. Junior middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.), out since the first match of the season with a knee injury, made her return to the court in a limited role and recorded three kills.

Jordan Larson led Nebraska (13-0, 5-0) with 14 kills, while Sarah Pavan added 11 and Melissa Elmer and Christina Houghtelling had 10 each. Houghtelling also had a match-high nine digs and Elmer had six blocks.

Baylor hung with Nebraska for most of game one. The Huskers took a 15-12 lead, but the Bears answered back to tie the game at 17. Baylor could never get out in front and tied the game for the last time at 21, then Nebraska ripped off the last nine points of the game in a row behind the serve of Larson for a 30-21 win. Nebraska hit .390 for the game, while the Bears hit .200. Elmer led the Huskers with eight kills, mostly on overpasses by the Bears.

Nebraska jumped out to a 6-1 lead in game two and used a five-point run to push it to 16-8. Larson then served the Huskers to seven straight points and a 25-12 lead and Nebraska put the game away, 30-17. Nebraska hit .394 for the game, while holding Baylor to .067.

Leading 13-10, Nebraska went on a seven-point run to go up 20-10. Nebraska went on to clinch the match with a 30-18 decision.

Nebraska hit .409 for the match, while holding Baylor to .133. The Huskers outdug the Bears, 45-40, and outblocked them, 8.0-4.5.

The Bears return to action when they travel to face Colorado Wednesday at 8 p.m. CDT at the Coors Events/Conference Center in Boulder, Colo.
