HOUSTON, Texas - The 7th Annual Met/Rice Tournament Finals hosted an all-Baylor contest as two veterans compete in a tough three-set match Sunday in Houston.
Second seed Benjamin Becker had the upper hand early winning the first set in the bracket-A finals, but top-seeded Benedikt Dorsch battled back through two match points and eventually defeated Becker 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.
In the Bracket-B consolation finals match, Jon Reckewey played tough to take the first set 7-6, then eased through the second and final set 6-0 to defeat Nolan Polley of Kentucky, 7-6, 6-0 to take the victory.
Vladimir Portnov had a rough start in the bracket-A finals. Baylor's most recent transfer droped the first set 3-6 to Gonzalo Figuereido of Texas A&M-Corpus Christ. Portnov battled tough to take the second set 6-4, but couldn't hold off Figuereido's third-set charge and lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Greg Shearer and Reckewey competed in the bracket-A consolation finals against Joel Reckewey and Adrian Szatmary of Nebraska. The Baylor duo defeated the Big 12 foes 8-6.
Baylor starts conference play Friday at Nebraska. Matches are schedule to begin and 1 p.m. The Bears then travel to Colorado Sunday, Jan. 30 before returning home to host USC Thursday, Feb. 3.
